In launching Fifth Wall Records over a year ago in their Brooklyn garage, label cofounders Divvorce and Hound Scales took a decidedly international approach, signing only a handful of American artists. However, while they still choose not to define the label by lines in the sand, it has become impossible to ignore the genius lurking in their own backyard.

This led them to reach out to some of the best producers (and humans) they had met and admired since their arrival in the city, assembling a split 12” of all New York artists entitled The Giant Monarch EP. While there is probably enough talent in New York to fill several Olympic-size pools’ worth of records, the four artists that best fit their particular vision for The Giant Monarch EP were L’estasi Dell’oro, Loric, Greg Z, and Shawn O’Sullivan.

Fellow NY label owner L’estasi Dell’oro crafts an ominous journey through the darkest regions of techno, its compressed 909s underscored by a constant, eerie haze, while Loric takes a vastly different approach, laying disco samples over a thunderous kick, all accented by mechanic but remarkably funky percussion.

On the B side, Greg Z delivers his signature stripped back, analogue take on techno, carefully placing metallic elements to build the sonic equivalent of the vibiest grandfather clock in world history, and last but not least, Shawn O’Sullivan perfectly encapsulates the spirit of the concrete jungle in techno form.
