‘I’m not at liberty to reveal exactly who is behind H.O.T. Records, but suffice to say it’s a collective with ties to both Homopatik in Berlin and Offenbach’s Robert Johnson club. Its production team is 2 Bitches From Queens, two DJs and producers who are neither bitches nor from Queens (though I guess that depends on your definition of “bitches”). In June they released two records a week apart. The first is, to my ears, the best house 12-inch that’s come out this year.

All four tracks are DJ tools—big, driving and unembellished, but with simple hooks that give them great personality. It’s hard to describe exactly what makes something like “The Dip” so good—it’s basically just a driving, sub-heavy beat with the occasional synth stab and a voice saying “work it”—but it’s sure to galvanize a mix, or at least get your heart rate up. “Women On Drums” is a bit more fleshed out, with fierce hi-hats, a single strobing chord and a vocal sample, “women beat on the drums,” lifted from the ’80s New York dance classic “The Dominatrix Sleeps Tonight.”

But the record’s real masterstroke is “Delkab Ave,” a beat tool that’s as simple as it is memorable. Like “The Dip,” this one is mostly drums—a fat kick dusted with shakers, cowbells and other hand percussion—plus a single word, “Chanté,” pronounced with enough sass to bring the whole track to life. As a bonus, this one comes with and without the driving bassline. Simple stuff all in all, but flawlessly executed and loaded with charisma. House DJs would be crazy to pass this one up.’ – Resident Advisor
