Last year was quite the breakthrough for Repitch Recordings founder Shapednoise with two albums on Opal Tapes and Hospital Productions complemented by the Violetshaped project with Violet Poison. With that latter endeavour seemingly put to bed, Shapednoise’s first solo 12″ of the year comes via the Russian Torrent Versions series. The eleventh release overall and fifth so far this year from RTV, this four tracker slots in nicely alongside the sonically abrasive contributions from Randomer, Domenico Crisci, Person Of Interest and NGLY and is perhaps the label’s most bracing release so far. Punishing tones seem to be the over riding concept, whether they are free of rhythmic concern (as on “The Existence Of A Vital Reality”) or melded to some loose, apocalypse defining groove (“Illumination” could quite easily soundtrack the end of the world).
