Over the last two decades, John Beltran has composed some of the most beguiling ambient, evocative techno and modern classical around. It’s this illustrious history that makes Music For Machines, Beltran’s compilation of ambient and downtempo electronica for Delsin, such an enticing proposition. Predictably, it doesn’t disappoint, gathering together a selection of obscure but inspired compositions that variously touch on bright-eyed positivity (Greg Chin’s sublime “Dashboard Angels”, A2B2C2’s “Stereometry” and Mick Chillage’s “Only In My Dreams”), becalmed, otherworldly soundscapes (Vincent Volt, Winter Flags), and bittersweet, heart-aching brilliance (Gacha Bakradze’s standout “Mississippi”, a pedal steel-laden slice of ambient bliss). In a word: flawless.
