Back in 2012, DJ Sprinkles and Mark Fell surprised everyone with the release of The Complete Spiral, a collaborative 12″ on the former’s Comatonse label that brandished three sublime exercises in classicist deep house. It was made all the more distinctive by the usage of a vocal sample from ’80s Trade Unionist Arthur Scargill, perhaps a knowing nod to all the deep house producers over the years that have sampled that Martin Luther King speech. Some three years on and the pair return with a new 12″, Fresh Insights (EP 1), which suggests there will be further insights forthcoming from Fell and Sprinkles. Again the production is spot on, be it the simple exercise in chord rich instrumental deepness that is “Insights” or the lead track “Fresh” which utilises more spoken words, this time from Tony Benn.
