Originally released on vinyl only, through DJ Bone’s Subject Detroit imprint, the Subject Tokyo EP is definitive of the personal era that Rennie Foster was living at the time of it’s creation. During a time of transition from foreign newcomer to underground Tokyo techno representative, it was a quiet question at the time why Rennie was chosen to represent Tokyo for this series, but not for long as the EP solidified his mark on the city’s music scene with force. Tracks like the star-gazing “Belt of Orion” and the militant “Hot LZ-13” pulse with the futuristic urgency of the Japanese metropolis, yet point directly across the ocean to the Motor City. The connection of Detroit and Tokyo runs deep, and this record is nothing less than definitive, sonic proof. “Genkaku” which translates as “Illusion”, is a jacking, sample heavy track, that speaks to Rennie’s deep roots in Hip Hop and House subculture, yet is more about capturing the raw feeling of early sampler based music than any obvious sample. The tribal futurism of “Perception Guide” is a fast paced nod to Detroit, tribalism, and beyond with original, dynamic, drum programming that emanates free expression and the love of international techno culture beyond borders and eras.
