“Strangers”, the new full length offering from Teleseen (Feel Up Records, 6.9.2015), is the soundtrack to a nomadic world connected by rhythm. The latest project of producer, DJ and multi-instrumentalist, Gabriel Cyr, is what he describes as a, “Musical meditation on foreignness, strangeness and the feeling of being in a culture but also apart from it.”

Lead single “Outlines” features a Zouk bassline warped through modern synthesis, contrasted with sunny guitars and crisp beats. “Distant Drums”, a tune that has been featuring heavily in many DJ sets, makes explicit the connections between the avant garde dance music between Brazil, Portugal and Angola. Starting as a batucada take on a deep, tribal afro house rhythm, the song builds to hip shaking crescendo and resolves with dirty, interlocking synth melodies.
While “Strangers” gives a nod to Cyr’s roots as a jazz musician and his past as a pirate radio DJ in Brooklyn, the record is sunny, tropical and geared towards the dance floor. A mash-up of styles, recorded in New York and Rio de Janeiro, which pulls influence from Brazilian and African music without losing its foundations in dance music.
Woven through the album’s tracks are live elements from a wide range of musicians, all of whom experiment with styles outside of their native traditions. These encounters are at the foundation of the album’s concept. Regular collaborator, jazz and afro-beat saxophonist Morgan Price (Fela Live), keyboardist Brion Synder, guitarist Nkumu Katalay, bassist Henry Schroy, drummer Renato Godoy and percussionist Daniel D’Erricco complete the record’s musical tapestry.

Drawing influences from music as diverse as ethio-jazz, afro house, samba and dub techno, Teleseen stitches a strikingly original blend of old and new sounds into a danceable mix. The primary project of producer, multi-instrumentalist and DJ Gabriel Cyr, draws on a wide range of collaborators, to create productions that make equal use of programming and live instrumentation and find inspiration from his day job as a studio engineer and producer for other artists, as well as frequent travels between Brazil, Africa and the US.

These days Cyr works and lives between various points in Brazil and NYC. He has traveled the world as DJ and producer, bringing his DJ and live PA sets to everywhere from chic Beirut night clubs to grungy church basements in Newark, NJ. He hosted a weekly reggae and world music radio show on pioneering Brooklyn pirate radio station free103point9 for five years, and has worked professionally as an engineer with everyone from Alicia Keys to Matthew Barney. His productions have received plays and support from Mary Ann Hobbs, Boddhi-Satva, and Blaze…
