Brooklyn based DJ, producer and record label boss, Victor Calderone, continues to push the boundaries oftechno after years wowing the global underground with his unique take on subcultural dance floorweaponry. After the outright success of his massive Burden EP on Adam Beyer’s Drumcode imprint, pluscountless other releases and an enviable touring schedule, the techno maestro returns to the fold with theRoll EP, the debut release on his brand new imprint dedicated to true techno sounds: MATTER+.

After bringing the global techno scene to a standstill through lauded MATTER+ events at Space Ibiza NY,Stereo Montreal and more, the US based visionary is releasing no-nonsense, uncompromising sounds thatshowcase the same musical output and vibe as that of the sell out parties.

Roll EP sees Calderone inaugurate the label in an atypically rigid and groove infested style. Staying true toits namesake, the tracks rolling, staunch and unrelenting drive encase a biting, snarling bassline, designedto take the listener deep into hypnotic territory. Bass heavy, growling and anchored down by phase blastsand eerie percussive stabs, this is heads down techno at its most upfront.

Splitting Atoms turns down the resonating kick drums for a more sparse but just as heavy romp. With moreacidic, hypnotic traits, more space between noises and a focus on acid drop basslines, this heads down roller signifies Victor’s in tune ear for solid techno beats. Mutation – although still laced with resonatingkicks and unrelenting drive – goes for a more bumping, groove laden sound, sprinkling touches of houseswing and funky percussive touches before white noise on the break heralds air-strike bass raining downupon the drum pattern as 808 snares take the track to full capacity.

Finally, Axis focuses on bottom heavy, bass-soaked drums, using the pulsating subs and echoing,mechanistic melodic touches as its core instrument, stripping all swing and groove away while industrial,hollowed out noises set the tone as Roll comes to a punishing close.
