On Broken Earth Ash Moses, as Tunnel Signs, embraces the arrival of fall and the chill of EBM on the three-track EP, his second release on HAKT in 2015. The Australian, by way of New York City, takes his inspiration of the Gotham city to the next level on the companion to August’s Phantom Echo — an EP that heralded the end of summer while laying out a welcome mat for lengthening dark nights in the city — with tracks that evoke the rush of unbroken momentum and the cruel, gear in motion beat of the day-to-day grind.

“Cracks” begins with a cold militaristic beat layered over a cryptic audio sample of a distant disembodied male voice via loudspeaker. The sense of building authoritative oppression breaks before overwhelming, giving way to awe-striking wonderment that calls back to his earlier work on Dream City. The EMB undercurrents of “Cracks” are isolated from any sense of reprieve by Emile Strunz. Turning the vocal sample into an omnipresent menace, he transforms the track into an eleven minute work-room soundtrack. It’s not until the acid-tinged finish that Strunz offers an escape.

In contrast to the cold that precedes it, “Sylvan Mist” captures the feeling of joyous propulsion into a night of the unknown. Reverse handclaps warm the track and punctuate the beat, while a driving staccato synth provides hopeful urgency. Bringing to mind a subway car coming to street level at the break of dawn, “Sylvan Mist” closes by blurring and fading into a hazy memory
