Bidding to prove that when he has control of the dancefloor he’s untouchable like Elliot Ness, Luis Martinez takes a ride with Clarisse down Route 66. The Colombia-born producer has made massive strides since a Bologna education playing drums and guitar, able to namecheck Circus Recordings, Deeperfect and Decay Records as places where his platters have mattered, and show off a passport bearing club stamps from London, Barcelona, Ibiza and Berlin. Anyone who has been following Martinez’ sound in the last 12 months will know that the indicator for a good time is once they see steam starting to rise off the turntables.

‘Last Soul’ opens up with a veneer of subtlety and anticipation, but Martinez won’t forgo his thick, loud snap of drum kicks, smothering everything it comes into contact with. Smatterings of effects, percussion and a lone voice attempting a break for freedom as the last man standing, add thin layers of identification and formation to a heavyset, one-track mind house drop that gets louder coming out of the stifling breakdown and allows voices to reach the rooftops. Dancing until dehydration becomes a problem, Martinez’ trip to Cali will melt many a venue’s Popsicle stand.

With the kind of heavy, bass-rebounding tribal beats acting as new year’s detox to dunk yourself in, Martinez’ ‘California Love’ requires little to get it going, ready right off the bat as palm-stinging percussion turns the rhythm into a rattlesnake. A gossiping monologue is oblivious to the sweat saturating the place, and a funkiness from several stories below makes hay out of being buried by the incessant groove. Sun up or sun down, this six minute workout tips the scales.
