Long-serving Back To Basics residents Ralph Lawson and Tristan Da Cunha know rather a lot about quality house music, so it’s good to see them sharing some of the “rare” and hard-to-find favourites they’ve championed at the long-running Leeds institution. There’s naturally tons to set the pulse racing, from the Balearic-era piano-house bliss of M-I-Cara’s 1990 gem “Casa Beat”, strobe-friendly druggy stomp of the OG’s Freak Mix of Cassio Ware’s “I Wanna Freak Like This” and Cajmere’s deliciously eccentric rework of The Chicago Connection’s “Dancina”, to the ultra-deep early deep house/tech-house fusion of 51 Days’ “Paper Moon” and the celebratory brilliance of Black Science Orchestra’s celebrated “New Jersey Deep” (still one of the most rush-inducing house cuts ever to emerge from the UK in our eyes). Essential.
