Over the last quarter century, Johannes Heil has been one of Europe’s most consistent – and underrated – techno producers. As the latest release on his and Markus Suckut’s Exile label demonstrates, the German artist hasn’t lost any of his edge. Over four untitled cuts, Heil shows his mastery of the acid box; “A1” is all about the creepy vocal samples and a 303 pushed to the point of exhaustion, while on “A2”, Heil replicates a demented bee buzzing its way over powerful kicks and wild snare rolls. “B1” is more restrained – if that word exists in his lexicon – and focuses largely on a murky rhythm, while on the ‘B2’ cut, he comes back with a huge, building rave track.
