South African Bruce Loko is a man with many loves and influences, from visual arts and crafts to architectural technology, jazz music, and piano playing. He has released on quality labels like Atjazz Record Company and, of course, on Get Physical and has become one of his country’s finest house pioneers thanks to his artfully crafted sounds and unique DJ sets.
‘Devil’s Cry’ opens the EP in thrilling fashion with tense but inviting house drums. They are overloaded with an edgy synth sequence filled with a nagging sense of pain. It results in a track that hits an emotional sweet spot. ‘Falcons’ features Sandy Artwell and has big, rubbery kick drums. They set a mid-tempo pace which gives the elegant synth line plenty of room to breathe in bright, expressive ways. Lastly, Loko links with Sebee for ‘Lonely Mountain,’ an inventive track that has bright melodies bringing a sense of innocence to more turbulent, raw, and textured broken beats below. It’s a track with a thoughtful as well as a physical presence.
Devil’s Cry is an EP packed with unique energy and fresh perspective and is a greater taster for the album ahead.
