SHADED: I am so psyched this track is finally coming out. Cari and I wrote it in the summer of 2019, and after way too many people telling us the vocals were too X-rated naughty, Mikey Lion heard it and was DOWN. Desert Hearts is always open to take chances, so I am stoked it is coming out on DH.
Cari Golden: Layback Maybach’s concept has been on my mind for years. Powerful women want what they want and aren’t afraid to demand it. The song is a little bit of a lot of things, but what it isn’t is timid. Teaming up with SHADED was a blast because we’ve known each other personally for a really long time and watched each other come up. To have such trust in a collaborative process with some relatively incendiary lyrical content speaks to that history. We both knew we had to wait for it to find the right home with a label that wasn’t going to change the original idea, and we found that home in Desert Hearts. Though it may be “tongue in cheek”, as it were, there’s definitely a lesson in this song. Clearly.
