Tour De Force is an anthology of singles from Chicago producer and DJ Eddie Riot that showcases his enormous range as a musician. Beginning with this release is melodic techno track ‘House Terror’, reminiscent of an amplified rework of Lil Louis’ French Kiss, if done by John Carpenter. The next House music-inspired track, ‘Jesses’ feels like music for and from a larger space. This track juxtaposes elements of acid and the melodic progression of a true synth-pop tune, you’re almost waiting for vocals, as this one is ready for radio. ‘Manic’ is a hypnotic party started, or one that will take your mix over the top if you’ve already got the momentum. Followed by ‘Hyper’, a tight and energetic techno track that somehow fits a six hour set in one, easy-to-swallow pill. ‘Club X’ is decidedly more of an electro vibe, born not of the clubs but of the underground; you’ll start tapping your feet and before you know it you’re standing in front of the speaker at the club holding on for dear life. ‘Sirens’ would make a perfect companion track for the Jeff Mills classic ‘The Bells’. The next effort, Triumph is a hard driving EBM-esque track, what if Nitzer Ebb had a little melody? The multidimensional ‘Chan’ – a hypnotic mix of not quite cyber-goth, nor future-wave, and containing elements of true techno – is a grind in the basement of outer space. ‘Murcielago’ begins like a remix of any number of Depeche Mode efforts, before quickly making its way around the techno-sphere with elements of synthwave, electro and industrial, before resolving itself. If you fed the Pet Shop Boys LSD, put on a pot of coffee, and asked them to make a horror movie soundtrack, the end result would probably sound a lot like the 10th track on this album, ‘Gest’. The aptly titled ‘Angst’ is both hypnotic and anxiety inducing, if it doesn’t have you looking over your shoulder, you’ll at least wonder where the DJ will go from there. Closing out this release is the Eddie Riot original 1994. and a couple remixes. This merciliessly high-energy release takes page right of the playbook of Daft Punk when they were at their peak, somehow simple yet complex, and never boring. This is peak hour stuff. Eddie Riot’s 5am mix is just that, the version to play when things have already gotten a little weird and everyone is definitely feeling it. Lorenzo Vektor’s tight, Underworld-paced take on the track is for earlier in the night, when the kids still have energy; or after the Red Bull (or whatever else) has kicked in. A nice little breakdown allows a breath of fresh air before this collection of tracks is complete.//
