Behind the Bass / Club : Release Notes
Music composed, performed and recorded by Charbel Haber, Nicolás Jaar and Sary Moussa on August 2nd 2024 at Tunefork Studios in Beirut during the Israeli aggression against Lebanon. Charbel Haber – Electric Guitar, Electronics Nicolás Jaar – Bass Clarinet, Electronics Sary Moussa – Live Sound Processing (using real-time feeds from Haber and Jaar) Reality crashed yesterday Satire became news Fruits tasteless A murder of crows hanging on wires Facing a big white screen Movie buffs Fans of 80s snuff Cheering for death by assassination It felt like Beirut on a specific summer day When fire rains and drifters play I must have lied when I said it was my last breath It must be August The air is heavy Its loaded with lead and drama Crashing waves dance to the rhythm set by the broadcast journalist revealing the tragedies of the day It was another last war A short episode of another last conflict Before the sea decides to finally take over The fleeing tourists and crows are gone now Left behind are the seagulls Confused but finally alone Proud kings of the coastal dump For a moment there Beirut felt like a William Turner painting And the sea was getting away with it. Charbel Haber, Nicolás Jaar, and Sary Moussa are boundary-defying musicians and interdisciplinary artists whose practices span electronic music, sound design, performance, and collaborative art-making. Rooted in Beirut and Santiago, their work engages deeply with place, memory, and experimentation. Charbel Haber emerged from Beiruts post-war scene in the late 1990s, blending ambient and electroacoustic sounds with theater, film, and dance collaborations alongside artists like Rabih Mroué and Forced Entertainment. A founding member of bands such as Scrambled Eggs and The Bunny Tylers, Haber also co-founded influential labels like Johnny Kaftas Kids Menu. His recent project, A Common Misunderstanding of the Speed of Light, released on Nicolás Jaars Other People imprint, merges music, poetry, and photography. Nicolás Jaar, a Chilean-American artist, is acclaimed for emotionally rich and sonically adventurous music that spans ambient, experimental pop, and political soundscapes. His multifaceted output includes the collaborative band Darkside and the speculative audio series Archivos de Radio Piedras. Through his label Other People, Jaar supports experimental artists and interdisciplinary projects at the intersection of sound and critical inquiry. Sary Moussa, also part of Beiruts underground music scene, crafts intricate compositions that explore personal memory and regional soundscapes. His albums Imbalance and the forthcoming Wind, Again (2025), both on Other People, fuse ambient textures with generative sound design. A key collaborator in Lebanons performing arts scene, Moussa bridges electronic experimentation and deeply rooted sonic storytelling.
