Large Music proudly reissues its very first official release, Im Leavin You by Lil John Coleman, more than three decades after its original drop on June 15, 1993. Written and produced by John — then a rising Chicago talent and resident at the legendary Red Dog — the track began as a jazzy instrumental built around saxophonist Ulysses. Inspired, John wrote a single verse and asked Ulysses to sing over the groove. What followed was a raspy, soulful vocal performance that evoked Colonel Abrams and Teddy Pendergrass, cementing the track as something extraordinary. The records history is steeped in legend. Louie Vega was handed the only acetate copy and personally broke the track at the Sound Factory Bar in New York, sending shockwaves through the underground scene. Back in Chicago, the B-side carried the Red Dog Mix, named for Johns residency at the club that was the epicenter of the citys second wave of house. The release not only became a club anthem in Chicago and New York but also crossed the Atlantic, earning massive support in Londons underground house scene. The record brought Lil John and Large Records international acclaim, bolstered by a brilliant review from Larry Flick in Billboard magazine. For many, Im Leavin You points directly to the very origins of Chicago Deep House — raw, soulful, and timeless.
