As rich sonically as it is in social commentary, Marteka Fairs latest effort is a perfect fit for the budding discography of VAST. The Life After Internet EP consists of four tracks along with remixes by Bekkler and JAK. It draws inspiration from a time when the information revolution lay at our fingertips, promising what seemed at the time like a utopian frontier of human connection. Lucid Thinking communicates loudly and clearly that this will not be a forgettable record. Present and accounted for are all the tried-and-true hallmarks of specialist techno, but an inventive synth melody snaps the listeners train of thought into the moment in a way that only the most skilled producers are capable. No momentum is lost by the time Access Denied cues up. From its otherworldly groove to how its sound design taunts the listener with nonverbal vowel sounds, the single stands out as a case study in pushing the limits of what constitutes techno. It doesnt deviate far from its core motif nor does it need to. Missed Call follows with crystalline textures a la early Robert Hood, with a long section devoted entirely to the tracks hollow, rattling percussion. In his rendition, Bekkler reinterprets a small sliver of the source materials experimental chord progression to instill an air of urgency sure to trigger a shift in energy on any dance floor. Rounding out the original singles appearing on the tracklist of the EP is Frisson. While markedly more melodic than the music preceding it, its arrangement meanders in a way that might sound random to the untrained ear. JAK expanded upon this complex emotional palette in his remix, spinning it into the lore of an exhilarating story. Although more than three decades have passed since the advent of the Internet, mankind continues to grapple with its impacts on nearly every aspect of our day-to-day lives.
