Fifteen years after it first surfaced on the short-lived Lithuanian netlabel Dumblys, Sraunus' Out Of The City returns newly remastered, restored, re-contextualized and ready to be discovered by a new wave of deep listeners. What was once a hidden gem, now feels like a quiet cornerstone of the genre, a record whose importance became clearer with time. Behind Sraunus is Paulius Markutis, one of Lithuania's earliest deep-dub explorers. His moniker translates to 'flowing' or 'fluid' and Out Of The City stands as a perfect embodiment of that idea. These tracks flow. They circulate and they breathe. They drift with a calm inevitability, revealing new details with each pass. Even in 2010, inspired by the classic Berlin-born dub tradition yet unmistakably shaped by his own sense of space, mood, and narrative. The album opens with '13 Letland', whose sparse beat sits comfortably behind a veil of airy static and orchestral-like drones. It recalls the magical works of Wolfgang Voigt's Gas project, but with a distinctly Baltic chill that is crisp, open and gently melancholic. Its pacing is immaculate as it unfolds in slow ripples, each layer making room for the next, as if the audio itself were diffusing into the horizon. 'Maas' deepens the mood. Aquatic sounds surround a steady heartbeat rhythm while metallic chords rise and dissolve like submerged nautical chimes. It creates the sensation of floating just below the surface. 'Hvezda Tanec' picks up the energy, its crisp snare and bouncing low-end guiding a set of rising melodies that bloom like beacons of beautiful memories. It's one of the album's most emotionally direct pieces – transportive, enveloping, almost trance-like in its layered glow. 'Dospele' introduces a piano that lightly unfurls over a taut, restrained beat. Everything here feels light yet precise, a reminder of how tactile dub techno can be even in its quietest moments. Then comes 'Festa', the most rhythmically assertive track of the set. Its dub bounce hits with a more physical presence, chords more serious, atmosphere swirling in thicker. 'Osto' returns the album to a place of mystery with the slightly eerie, organic soundscape that expands the emotional side without breaking the albums meditative run . Grad_u's reconstruction of 'Festa' closes the record with the most techno-leaning approach. It tightens the focus and a fine counterpart to Markutis' original vision. Out Of The City feels like a walk-through shifting seasons. There are moments of stillness, bloom, fog and faint sunlight – each track a window into its own small, self-contained ecosystem. What makes the album endure is not just its atmosphere but its warmth of the chords, the patience of the arrangements and the quiet emotional undercurrent guiding everything. Rarely does an electronic album feel so beautifully suspended in time. This is dub techno at its most timeless: fluid, deep and endlessly replayable. The reissue, part of Greyscale's Archive Series, comes on wonderfully pressed double vinyl, a CD edition and artwork chosen with intention: Marija Marcelionyte-Paliuke's 'High Tide and Low Tide,' an image whose perpetual motion helps symbolize the fluid spirit of these recordings.
