Back after an undeserved hiatus, Standards & Practices welcomes long-time friend and associate Jake Reif (Dark Entries, Rong Music, L.I.E.S.) with the third EP on our sub-label, Double Standards. Jake’s first record with us as Device Control (“The Spirit Module”) garnered praise from all corners, finding favor with house and techno DJs alikeespecially those looking to bridge the gap between styles. This outing is comprised primarily of his excellent 2018 12 on Mystic Bill’s Children Of The Box imprint (vinyl only, not available digitally before) alongside three unreleased cuts from the same sessions. We can’t decide which are our favorites: from the machine-press groove of “A.T.L.H.” to the cosmic, reduced fusion of Spayc and of course the vibrating robo-funk of title track Silhouettes, all will make a mark in a multitude of club contexts. Jakes work mines a unique seam, blending an iconoclastic synthesis of influences from Belgian New Beat, early Wax Trax! industrial dance, as well as grimy Cajmere-esque drum workouts and Network-era bleep techno. To our ears, the results feel fresh and modern, avoiding trendy revivalism or bland nostalgia.
