Four tracks, made by hand, played from the inside out. At a moment when everything is optimized and automated, Cesar Ramirez does the opposite. Anytime opens the record with what loft house used to feel like in the nineties, bass-driven, swelling with keyboard swirls, vocal cuts arriving like a nudge from across the room. The rhythmic strings and lo-fi effects keep it moving without ever pushing too hard. Come on. By Myself pulls back into something more introspective, though playful is in there too. The tinkling keyboard sits over a subsonic bass line that sounds like King Tubby wandered into a Chicago basement sometime around 1993. Strings come in and out, equal parts disco and space odyssey. A synth halfway through lets the groove bubble over just enough before a distant vocal pulls everything back to earth. Bury the Hatchet is more insistent. Drums, percussion, bass, vibes, keys, chords, pads, filtered effects, all of it layered into something frenetic but still deep as the Pacific. The bass line jumps and wobbles at exactly the right moments, keeping the hypnotic groove moving in directions you don’t quite anticipate. Congo Fury closes the EP, and if you know the Mike Huckaby remix on FMR, here’s where it came from. Afro-Latin percussion loud in the front, thick chords working in and out, strings and pads building the layers, and then an electric piano solo that takes the whole thing into early morning territory.
