For the second 20 Years of Audiojack release, it’s the record that started everything: Robot. n nIn the summer of 2005, we were on the terrace at CircoLoco in DC10, Ibiza: then our favourite dancefloor in the world and somewhere we visited every chance we got. We were only a few months into learning how to make music, but standing there with our friends, excited and inebriated, we made a declaration: let’s make a track and get it played at DC10.n nFast forward to early 2006, and we’re standing in a Leeds record shop, playing our new demo. We’d already sent it to dozens of labels and received just one reply: thanks, but no thanks. As the CD played the DJ who ran the shop nodded away politely, until it reached the final track, Robot, when his eyebrows went up. He said his friend might be interested for his new label and picked up the phone. That friend was the now sadly departed Matt Tolfrey, who took a chance on two unknown producers from Leeds and signed Robot to his new label, Leftroom Records. n nLater that summer, after Robot had been signed, but before its release, we were back on the Circoloco dancefloor while Luciano was playing. Suddenly, something strangely familiar came through the speakers. We looked at each other in disbelief: it was Robot, and the dancefloor was going off. We had done exactly what we had promised ourselves a year earlier. Then, as the track reached the end and we were still trying to process what had happened, Luciano mixed in a second copy and played the whole thing again. A very special moment. n nSitting somewhere between electro and techno, Robot was memorably described by Lee Burridge as sounding like ‘a toaster stuck in a K-hole.’ For the 2026 version, we wanted to honour that original vibe rather than completely reinvent it, so we created a new edit and mixdown that retains its strange, unruly character but fits naturally into our sets today.n nBack in 2006, the original was remixed by an exciting emerging producer called Lee Mortimer. Twenty years later, Lee is better known as Friend Within, so it only felt right to invite him back to remix Robot all over again.
