Seductive jazz-rooted polyrhythms, deeper than deep house: Italian DJ and producer Nico Lahs lines up a five-track EP, painted in blue notes and soulful, hypnotic grooves. Dedicated to the love of the drums, “Mistress 19” is filled with tension, release, and the space to feel something real. Mistress 19 is a release of emotional dualism, of transformation and personal change for Southern Italian artist Nico Lahs. Each track was created between 2020 and 2025: the sounds of uncertainty, confusion, love, and loss ring throughout. Each sound flows in and out of the speakers, mirroring light and dark days, a global pandemic, and the birth of his first son. A1. “Fiori Di Maggio” (translating to May Flowers) sets the record’s atmosphere: shimmering, sun-drenched beats inspired by new life and the Italian seaside. A2. “A Place In The Sun” picks up the tempo, with house drums, washed out Fender Bass strings, and vocal chops a tripped-out dancefloor track to warm the mood. B1. “In Search of Truth”, dedicated to the love of the drums and the people who beat. Accents, clashes, and kicks dance across the clef of music. Keep your mind and senses open with this left-of-center, swinging track. Its an awe-inspiring, modern work of art painted in emotion and blue notes. B2. “XPRESSION” is deeper than deep, with an aesthetic similar to free jazz improvisation. A heavy and thick, slow jam with plenty of abstract percussion. The digital bonus track “Space Kush 808” circles the corner with a thick and nasty low end. Its the beat and rhythm, freak em cut on the record.
