As Soma Records continues its 35th anniversary celebrations, the SOMA35 series shines a light on the records that helped define not only the label’s identity, but the evolution of techno itself, creating a dialogue between the label’s past, present and future. Originally released at a pivotal moment in UK techno, Muggerscum Out captured Surgeon at his most uncompromising. Its stripped-back intensity, industrial edge and hypnotic power would go on to become hallmarks of Birmingham techno, influencing countless artists while cementing Soma’s reputation as a home for fearless electronic music. For SOMA35.2, four respected producers each take a unique approach to reimagining these timeless cuts. Slam deliver a masterclass in tension and restraint, transforming the source material into a deep, driving workout that balances hypnotic groove with their unmistakable sense of atmosphere. Their remix connects two of techno’s longest-standing institutions, celebrating the relationship between Soma and Surgeon that stretches back almost three decades. Portuguese heavyweight Lewis Fautzi pushes the material into darker territory, drawing out its industrial foundations through cavernous sound design, razor-sharp percussion and relentless forward momentum.
