Ene Ese returns to Plasmodia after the mycelium devoured last year’s Soltura!, this time with Durazno: a 7-track release built from textures that stick, thicken and refuse to sit still. Sergio Castro cooks from Ecuador, where the peach rarely gets to stay a peach: it gets boiled down, reduced, jarred, rendered into extract. That same appetite for forcing things into new shapes runs through the whole EP. “It’s about the moment the most beautiful, sweetest thing turns bitter, artificial, almost outside the body,” Ene Ese says of the concept behind the title. “Something born from absolute delicacy, from the natural order of things, forced into a tinned body, altered by insistence. A dessert you’re made to finish.” The EP took shape while Sergio was living through stress-induced tinnitus, and that overload of sound found its mirror in an overload of sugar, like a pleasure pushed exactly to the point where it starts to hurt. Opener ‘Arrope’ borrows its name from the old preserve made by simmering fruit juice for hours until its own sugar concentrates. The lead line does exactly that: it’s sticky, warped, reducing itself in real time until it’s thick enough to trap a spoon. ‘Nectar’ is another extraction, sweetness pressed until it turns sickly. The track lurches between total flood and sudden silence, before it finally curdles into mutant dubstep-dembow lumps. Pure transformation, timed to a heartbeat that won’t behave. ‘Jarabe’ leans prescriptive, almost medicinal: a bass-heavy dembow, playful and dense, dosed out like medicine nobody asked to take twice a day. The EP closes on ‘Ambar’; everything above finally set solid. A tribal techno that runs warm and cold in the same breath, amber in the literal sense: caught between liquid and stone, between drifting and driving forward. The remixes each pull a different thread loose. Zunfo drags ‘Ambar’ into wobbly garage territory: unstable ground, vocals chopped and worked over until they barely hold their shape. Entranas recontextualizes ‘Jarabe’ into fast, low-endy breakbeat that sits heavy in the jar. KOI closes things out by tipping ‘Arrope’ into a sugar-trance: an introspective loop that keeps circling back to the exact instant sweetness turns into something else.
