Peter Gall’s latest album, “Love Avatar” won the 2025 German Jazz Award for “Album of the Year”. There’s already a lot of buzz surrounding his new album, “DRUM SEEDS,” which is just as good but impressive in a different way. With plenty of energy and analog power, DRUM SEEDS puts the drums and original beats in the spotlight. But that’s only how it seems at first glance. The new solo album by drummer and producer Peter Gall is much more than just a drum statement. LOVE AVATAR was already a success story: Recorded with top musicians from the European jazz scene, this opus-like work garnered rave reviews, led to successful tours and performances at renowned jazz festivals, and won the German Jazz Award for “Album of the Year” in 2025. Instead of repeating a tried-and-true musical formula, Peter Gall is now venturing down entirely new paths: *DRUM SEEDS* is no ordinary, predictable album. It’s certainly not a classic jazz album. Produced entirely on his own, it naturally contains plenty of jazz—thanks to Peter Gall’s deep roots in this music—but just as much nonconformity. Drum beats are the album’s theme—and they come across as wild, raw, and brash, yet also embracing and trance-like. The groundwork was actually laid by Compost label head Michael Reinboth: He had long wanted to produce a pure drum album with Peter Gall. So they met at Jan Krause’s (Beanfield) studio, where Peter Gall had also recorded numerous albums for the Compost universe with the spiritual jazz supergroup WEB WEB. In this familiar atmosphere, hours of material emerged—ranging from beats and grooves to layered drumkits and, in some cases, orchestral drum-and-percussion arrangements. On DRUM SEEDS, Gall’s drumming is more prominent than on any of the roughly 50 albums the 42-year-old has recorded to date for various bands and artists. Nevertheless, he remains averse to sheer, virtuoso show-off drumming. “For me, it’s more about the feeling and the story a simple groove can tell,” he says. Peter Gall’s love for vintage analog synthesizers then derailed the original plan to let only the drums take center stage on the album. And suddenly, the mantric beats evolved into partly song-like tracks with immersive sound collages that evoke associations: with the ambient works of Aphex Twin, the dancefloor bangers of Caribou, the jazz of the ’60s and ’70s, with The Streets, Boards of Canada, the soundtracks of David Lynch or Blade Runner, but also, time and again, to Gall’s earlier jazz albums—with compelling melodies, profound harmonies, and an imaginative, spiritual atmosphere. The distinctive, characterful grooves with their powerful pull, however, remain the major narrative element of this kaleidoscopic record. All of this could be heard in a concentrated form in a dark subculture club, or played as danceable tracks under the festival sun. Jazz meets Kraut, ambient, club and breakbeats, intricate grooves, drum & bass, hip-hop, indie, and R&B—one might say. But the matter is deeper and more complex. Right from the start, a raw Krautrock vibe hits you hard on the powerful “Groove Receiver,” with two drumkits in stereo and hippie-esque Mellotron flutes. “Super Truth” is a turbulent rocket launch into an uncertain world. “Prophet Juno” captivates with its original pairing of polyrhythmic Afro groove and Juno-60 arpeggiator, culminating in an eruptive synth solo, before “You And Me” dissolves into dancefloor ecstasy with unconventional romance. “It Is Happening Again” is dreamlike, a journey into both the past and the future, richly contrasted by a triplet-based jazz pulse à la Elvin Jones. The plaintive melody and rousing chords over the Dilla-esque R&B groove of “Core” get under your skin, while the fast-paced “Hello Future Us” features Gall’s explosive jungle drumming over raw MS-20 basslines. “Seeds” pays homage to the original drum album concept with pure intensity. “Glow” is a melancholic anchor where drums and percussion interlock in pure flow. In “Zombie Satellite,” the analog brutality of the legendary Prophet synthesizer and Peter Gall’s influence from drum heroes like Tony Williams or Jack DeJohnette come to the fore, while “Disco Orbit” is steeped in a nebulous club atmosphere. The record ends with “Love Lost Bits”—dreamy, funky, almost trip-hop-like, wistful, and yet conciliatory. On DRUM SEEDS, raw drum seeds blossom and grow into magical plants. These remain unorthodox throughout and defy any stylistic categorization. Gall recorded all the instruments himself, completing the album over nearly two years in his own studio. Nevertheless, the music sounds communicative, playful, improvisational, interactive—and very personal. A live performance was never the goal from the start; the album stands as a work—like the all-time classic Sgt. Pepper—in its own right. The immediate connection with the music emerges when listening to the entire album, ideally on vinyl. But even in other formats, it is a thrilling odyssey full of twists, surprises, and that feeling of diving into a previously unheard world that opens up a little more with each track. As with “Love Avatar”, the painting on the cover is by Munich-based artist Ena Oppenheimer. Her works are now on display at renowned institutions such as the Pinakothek der Moderne and the Haus der Kunst in Munich, and were selected by Ströer for a public poster campaign.
