Folding techno propulsion into dubwise shadowlands, Slimy Ape returns to Menace with four tracks primed for the deeper moments in the heaviest dances. Where his previous Onstera EP showed off wild, unpredictable flair, this follow up takes a more heads-down approach, loaded with poise and precision. ‘Flow State’ is the perfect case in point, marching into unknown zones on a tuff 4/4 pulse. Echo chamber treatments bring a broad palette of half-hinted sonic impressions to life, marking out a vast, immersive space around the powerful rhythm section. With its balance of space and presence, it’s a masterclass in soundsystem principles. From its intricate, minimalist intro ‘Invasive Species’ opens up into even eerier atmospherics with a nocturnal tint. A tightly clipped, weighty breakbeat rolls through this tense backstreet labyrinth, keeping the dark groove moving forwards with twitchy precision. ‘Twisted Root’ opens up the second half of the EP with a more pointedly broken framework aligned with the foundational swagger of OG dubstep, but our great Ape gives the drums a lick of electro punch that cuts through the steely surroundings with modernist zeal. ‘Rumination’ is the understated closer that seals the deal on this heads-down missive; an organic, meditative stepper laced with dub techno chord shimmers and roots-deep drum patter, marking out an internal reflection purpose-built for darker dances.
