Behind the Progressive House : Release Notes

An embarrassment of musical riches that has flowed from a partnership steering Meanwhile since its very first release, GMJ & Matter mark the label’s 95th outing with the twin-track “Northern Line / Shinto”. Melbourne-based architects of a deep and emotive variant of Progressive House, Gavin Griffin and Matty Doyle have been at the heart of the Meanwhile story ever since “Lost on Origin” launched the imprint in 2020. “Gauntlet” and “Eldarin” followed within months, before the likes of “The Path / Perfect Storm”, “Stellaris / Idritah” and March 2025’s “Telomeres” each broadened the duo’s sonic footprint on the label they co-founded together. Away from the collaborative fold, both artists continue to flourish in their own right, with GMJ’s “Unwalled / Sapience” and Matter’s “Empty Universe / Welcome to You” landing within a month of each other from March 2026. January 2026 saw GMJ & Matter open their account for the year with “Cryo / Keepers”, a statement of intent that set the tone for a prolific year. June brought “Fess” alongside Vapour Recordings label head, Kasey Taylor and “Emerge” with Zankee Gulati on Mango Alley, before “Verticality” arrived on Balance Music in July. Now the progressive doyens return to their spiritual home with a powerful statement of intent. Traveling with relentless pace, “Northern Line” immediately enthrals with its chunky backdrop, painstaking bassline and melodic tapestry. Woven with a beautiful symmetry, the two elements entwine in gradually filtered energy that opens up in majestic fashion at the mid-point. Thickly textured pads add atmosphere and reverb-coated effects create a rolling energy that conjures a visualisation and sonic identity of a tube on the London Underground. Building on the energy of its partner track, “Shinto” is a typically masterful production full of verve and low-end energy as it gathers pace through a multi-faceted percussive layer of shakers and subtle organic hits that permeate throughout the 7-minute piece. A repetitive melodic phrase creates a hypnotic tension as it filters gently in smooth syncopated fashion, and a beatless breakdown makes the most of the glorious cast of sonic characters before continuing on its deep progressive journey. Charting a course from the serenity of the temple to the rumble of London’s underground tunnels, “Northern Line / Shinto” finds GMJ & Matter forging another bright new path.
