Jean-Benoît Dunckel Barbier, known professionally as Benoit in his solo electronic work, was born September 7, 1969 in Versailles, France. A mathematician by training, he first gained recognition as one half of the French electronic duo Air alongside Nicolas Godin, with the partnership beginning in the indie band Orange before evolving into their acclaimed electronic project. Dunckel has operated under the alias Darkel and began releasing solo material under the Benoit moniker in 2011.

Benoit's solo output spans deep house, tech house, indie dance, and nu disco territories across labels including Leftroom Limited, Soul Clap Records, and Culprit. His releases between 2011 and 2017 demonstrate a groove-focused approach that bridges the gap between dancefloor functionality and Air's signature melodic sophistication.
