Candi Staton

Candi Staton, born Canzetta Maria Staton in Hanceville, Alabama in 1940, entered electronic music in 2012 with her first release on August 30th. The American soul and R&B vocalist, who began her career in gospel music as part of the Jewell Gospel Trio, transitioned into house music production over five decades after her musical debut. She has released music under the aliases Birry Meretab and Canzetta Sussewell throughout her career.

Staton produces house, deep house, and Afro house tracks for Glitterbox Recordings and Defected Records, bringing her distinctive vocal style to contemporary electronic productions. Her seven electronic releases span from 2012 to 2025, with her most recent output appearing on Defected's "Top Tracks of 2025" compilation. Her house music maintains the soulful vocal approach that defined her earlier disco and R&B work, adapted for modern dancefloor contexts with the deeper, groove-oriented rhythms characteristic of the Glitterbox and Defected catalog.
