Function is the techno project of David Sumner, a producer and DJ from New York who joined Regis' Sandwell District collective in 2004. Sumner also operates under the aliases VEX and Dan Nurse, with his first release under the Function moniker appearing in June 2012. He runs the Point Of Departure label, which serves as a primary outlet for his productions.
Function's sound spans peak time driving techno and raw deep hypnotic variations, with releases appearing on Tresor Records, A-TON, and Eaux alongside his own Point Of Departure imprint. His productions range from melodic house and techno to experimental electronica, maintaining the industrial edge associated with the Sandwell District aesthetic. With 19 releases documented since 2012 and activity continuing through 2025, Function delivers both dancefloor-focused peak time material and deeper, more introspective compositions that work across different points in a DJ set.
