Michele Gori Artist Bio
Michele Gori (24 February 1980 in Domodossola) is an Italian jazz musician (flute, composition). He is internationally recognised as a flute specialist.
Gori received his first flute lessons at the age of nine at the Philharmonic Society of Villadossola under the direction of his uncle Stefano Gori. After graduating from the “Giorgio Spezia” grammar school in Domodossola, he studied flute at the “Guido Cantelli” conservatory in Novara in 2000 and began his professional career as a flutist in chamber music and orchestral groups and as a flute teacher in schools. In 2001 he began to study jazz more closely; he took courses with Fabrizio Spadea and Ramberto Ciammarughi. In 2004 he moved to Paris, where he studied jazz flute with Bernard Duplaix and jazz piano with Frank Woeste at the Centre d’Informations Musicales until he graduated. In 2009 he obtained an academic diploma in jazz music at the Conservatorio “Giuseppe Verdi” in Milan. He took further lessons with Enrico Rava and Sam Most.
In 2007 SplascH Records released Gori’s debut album My Jazz Flutes with his quartet, which (still in 2022) consists of Roberto Olzer on piano, Roberto Mattei on double bass and Nicola Stranieri on drums. In 2011, another album in quartet formation followed with Flute Stories. Since 2012, he has regularly performed solo concerts in which he combines flutes in different registers with the help of electronics. For this purpose, he was one of the first flutists to use a loop station; in addition, he soon became a pioneer in experimenting with live electronics. In 2015, he recorded the album The Electric Flute, which was received positively by experts internationally. With his flute colleagues Stefano Benini and Stefano Leonardi, he also played in the combo Flut3ibe. Furthermore, he runs a quartet with the accordionist Roberto Gervasi. He can also be heard on albums with Rosalia de Souza, with Renato Pompilio, the Lampronti-Olivieri Duo and the Zeitgeber Ensemble.
Since 2002, Gori has written a section dedicated to the jazz flute for the website Jazzitalia, with 30 episodes to date. In 2008, he published his first didactic publication, Jazz Flute Training I on Casa Musicale Eco, which was followed by others. Since 2011, he has been regularly invited as a concert artist and lecturer to flute congresses in Europe and the United States; he has also given jazz flute master classes at European conservatories. From 2012, he taught as a professor at the Ferrara Conservatory; he was the first Italian flutist to lead a special course for jazz flute there, recognised by the Ministry of Education. He also advocated for the official inclusion of the flute in the programme of three-year jazz studies in Italy. Since 2018, he has been professor of jazz and coordinator of the jazz music department at the Conservatoire “Emmanuel Chabrier” in Clermont-Ferrand. Read more on Last.fm.
