About

Sandwell District is a techno collective formed in 2002 by Karl O'Connor, David Sumner, and Juan Mendez. The group operated as both a performing unit and label owners, running their own Sandwell District imprint from 2002 until the collective disbanded in 2011. The trio established themselves within the underground techno scene through nine years of releases and performances before going inactive.

Their sound spans raw, deep, and hypnotic techno alongside melodic house and techno variations, with tracks ranging from driving peak-time material to more introspective electronica. Recent releases appear on Point Of Departure, featuring 13 releases between 2023 and 2025, suggesting a return to activity after their decade-long hiatus. The collective's output maintains the dark, industrial-influenced aesthetic they developed during their original 2002-2011 run, delivering both atmospheric deep cuts and harder-edged dancefloor tracks that work across different parts of a DJ set.
