About

Underworld is a UK electronic music group formed by Rick Smith and Karl Hyde in 1987 from Romford, following the disbandment of their previous band Freur. The duo began releasing technoid material in 1991 and added DJ Darren Emerson to create their classic three-piece lineup. Their track "Born Slippy NUXX" became an anthem of the mid-1990s after appearing in Danny Boyle's film "Trainspotting" in 1996. The group has operated under the alias Lemon Interupt and releases through Smith Hyde Productions.

Underworld produces peak time driving techno alongside melodic house and techno, spanning tempos from downtempo electronica to high-energy dance tracks. Their releases appear on labels including Smith Hyde Productions, Different, Spectrum, and Independent, with their Electrobuzz catalog running from 2011 to 2024 across eight releases. The group's sound encompasses electronic pop elements while maintaining their techno core, delivering both club-ready peak time material and more experimental electronica. Their music combines ambient textures with driving beats, reflecting their evolution from guitar-based pop to their established position in electronic music.
