Kansas City-based producer Huerco S returns to his Royal Crown of Sweden alias for a follow-up to the critically acclaimed R.E.G.A.L.I.E.R. EP on Anthony Naples Proibito imprint. As you might expect from a project described by its creator as emphasising “the play between a drum machine and a 4 bar sample”, this is direct, no-frills house music, but its simplicity in no way detracts from its style. Huerco delights in teasing an astonishing array of textures from a basic template, the swirling big-room funk of ‘Malaren’ being a prime example. Elsewhere there is an abundance of smoky, sultry down-tempo style in closing pair ‘Fauno Rosso’ and the aptly named ‘Soft Things’. This is an EP of hidden subtlety that will reward repeat listens as much as it excites dancefloors.
