Cosmobox Direct DownloadsTechno doesn’t really do comebacks; with a few notable exceptions like Luke Slater, it is a particularly unforgiving style of music. This makes the reappearance of German producer Ian Pooley all the more interesting. Is he still relevant or does his new work sound out of date? The answer is a resounding ‘yes’ in favour of Pooley. “April 09” sees him dish out a tough techno banger; the percussion has all the impact of a nail bomb ripping through flesh and the filters churn grimly. “Damage” is just as relentless, with a rumbling bass and rattling hats to the fore. Only on “WLK2” does the German producer give a glimpse of his deep house past – for now, it seems that the present is a far bleaker but enthralling place for Pooley.
