The twenty-fourth expidition into Ethereality welcomes back New Zealand mountain dweller Fiordland, whose talents have been showcased from Seven Villas to Future Avenue since he last paid us a visit. This time he brings us three distinctly different sonic stories in the book of Solstice. Opening with the title track, the pounding kick drum and atmospheric foley percussion meet with melancholic chords, energetic arpeggios and pulsating stabs to forge a firm foundation. But after a short breakdown, spirits build to an epic climax and cause a phrenetic frenzy when it drops. You have been warned. Aether packs more punch as it leaps further into techno territory. Airy pads offer occasional respite from the head-down, fist-pumping thump of a man on mission, but you will probably be too hypnotised to notice. Southern Echoes drops both the tempo and energy levels for a sweet slice of mellow drama. Organic drums and soothing instrumentation showcase a laidback sonic landscape with sparse synths adding accents here and there. The breakdown drifts us away like a floating daydream, but urgency beckons listeners back to shore as a bustling lead melody bursts into life and finishes the fantasy on a high.
