Behind the Techno (Raw / Deep / Hypnotic) : Release Notes
Subset returns to Primary Colours with Gathering The Threads, a record that feels reflective rather than declarative. Following recent work with Echo Inspectors on “Youthman” and the measured pulse of “Impedance” from the Antipodean Dubs compilation, this release settles into its own pace. There is no sense of urgency here, only continuation. Across four originals and a remix from Pugilist, the collection leans into low frequency weight and spatial awareness. The grooves are patient. The arrangements are economical. Each element is given room to sit in the mix without excess. “Dust Breather” opens the record with a steady four to the floor rhythm. Dub chords move across the stereo image in soft repetitions while a rounded bass line keeps the track grounded. The percussion is direct and unforced. It is functional but not rigid, designed as much for movement as for immersion. Pugilist approaches “Dust Breather” from a different angle. His version lowers the centre of gravity. The bass carries more grit, the atmosphere thickens. Where the original moves with ease, the remix narrows its focus and leans into texture. The groove remains intact, but the mood shifts toward introspection. The title track introduces Italiks on vocal, placed carefully within a stepping rhythm that draws from dub traditions where the chords are warm and sustained. This track never reaches for drama. Instead, it settles into a communal cadence. “Suroch” follows with a deeper register. The bass rolls in long arcs beneath crisp drums that hint at a reggae lineage. Reverb from spring style processing gives the track a tactile shimmer. Closing piece “Dub We Bring” reduces the framework further. The rhythm is sparse, almost skeletal, allowing each bass pulse and chord fragment to carry weight. Space becomes the central instrument. The track does not seek resolution so much as suspension. Subset refines his vocabulary within this release rather than expanding it, and in doing so delivers a record that values tone, depth, and measured progression over spectacle.
