Spiritual freestyle music, balearic house, soulful and jazzy. An EP packed with all that lovely, heart-warming elements, that make a Compost release so special. And, fittingly, a remix by Rainer Trüby & Marlow is also set to be released later. “The Blessing” was the production where everything fell into place. The potential was there from the start, but it took a long while before the song suddenly emerged from the layers of instruments and sounds. Truly happy with the result, but maybe still unsure whether the endless hours of listening had clouded his ears, Styn sent the track to Lex Empress who is not only the most gifted vocalist he knows, but also his musical partner, conscience and guide. She confirmed what he suspected: this is our music, this is a proper song. And it deserves a vocal. The two later recorded it while attending Southport Weekender, where Lex improvised the full 11 minutes of spoken word and vocals, in one single take. And in that single take, she captured the essential message of the track, the unlocking of a potential that had always been there, and the essence of the friendship between them. A blessing, in a blessing, in a blessing. “The Beach” captures exactly the atmosphere Didiér Styn has in mind during his long sets at the beach, where the hours around sunset are his favourite part. This is where his set evolves from soul, jazz, funk and disco music into more electronic sounds, without yet catering to the dancefloor. Melodic, atmospheric, still slow paced, often referencing the early days of house music, with a sound that sits between the Balearic sound and the early wave of Italian house productions. Layering stabbing keys with a lazy bassline and laid-back percussion, it’s a track built entirely for that sunset moment. In “Oeufs Durs,” Didiér Styn shows that although he has a clear musical signature, his sound still varies widely. “Oeufs Durs” caters much more to the later hours on the dancefloor, or perhaps even the early morning afterhours. A synth-laden, bass-driven track, deep, dubby and haunting, it keeps the dancefloor’s attention by slowly but surely building and progressing, without ever going for the climax. The title is also a small wink: when the Compost label owner joked the release might benefit from a song with maybe a bit more “Eier,” Styn simply delivered, hard-boiled and all.
