Kristin Velvet takes a step away from the hip-house bangers that have defined much of her recent output, revealing a more elegant and nuanced side of her sound on The Traveller / Joy. On the A-side, “The Traveller” lives up to its name. Brass stabs, flashes of piano and a driving organ line unfold over a warm, propulsive groove. Rich in musical detail, it’s a mesmerising modern house instrumental. On the flip, “Joy” channels a deeper, gospel-infused feeling into a contemporary house framework.
