Behind the Techno (Raw / Deep / Hypnotic) : Release Notes

Deep and controlled, these five cuts find a comfortable balance between dub techno atmosphere and rhythms created to keep a set moving. Latvian producer Hijack Signal returns to Greyscale with Blacksite Signals, following his Unfolding Path EP earlier this year and marking the 168th edition of the label’s Mood Series. ‘Blacklist Signal’ is an excellent introduction, establishing a minimal beat while chords weave around the rhythm in hypnotic cycles. A melodic element gradually rises into focus, adding another layer of depth to the track. ‘Untitled’ immediately adds more grit through rolling bass notes and a funky tech rhythm. There is a serious groove at work here, with the looping structure allowing small changes to make a noticeable impact. ‘Nightsky’ changes the mood perfectly mid-EP. More relaxed and light on its feet, it lets its melody slowly reveal itself against an airy backdrop. There is plenty of breathing room between the elements, making it one of the EP’s most breathtaking moments. ‘Blacksite Sector’ is perhaps the most dubby moment here, while ‘Flight’ closes it out with the darkest material of the five. A heavier stomp pushes forward beneath brooding textures and ominous tonal shifts, giving the ending a shadowy conclusion. Hijack Signal understands how much mileage can be drawn from a strong loop, carefully adjusting chords, bass and atmosphere while keeping each track locked into its sweet spot. Blacksite Signals is perfectly suited for fans of the Greyscale label.
