Behind the Techno (Raw / Deep / Hypnotic) : Release Notes

Reaching 50 full-length albums is an achievement worth taking a moment to reflect on and celebrate for the Greyscale label. Swedish producer ADILR helps mark the occasion with Dreamroot, an extensive and broad two-disc collection pieced together from three years of work. Moving between ambient, dub techno, broken rhythms and more experimental electronics, it feels appropriately ambitious for such a landmark release. The first disc begins with ‘UVR’, where a dense atmospheric haze hangs above a cool dub groove. There are echoes of GAS and early Markus Guentner in its weightless surroundings, making it an excellent early-set exploration. ‘Sea Mirror’ brings together technological precision and dreamier textures before ‘Gryningsryttare’ introduces flowing aquatic sounds around a superb rhythm. On ‘1000 Days Of Sea’, distant chords appear to rise from enormous depths while melodic notes ripple across the surface with a watery resonance. ‘To Dust’ pushes further outward. Cinematic, eerie and unusually narrative in its construction, it suggests another possible direction for dub techno. Even more different is ‘OEverdoserad Dunderhonung’, combining broken beats and dub with a smoky jazz noir character and flashes of psychedelia. It is adventurous territory for Greyscale and one of Dreamroot’s most unique moments. The second disc ventures deeper into space. ‘Whispers From Pleiades’ begins beneath threatening clouds before an initially distant pulse comes into focus, surrounded by crisp percussion dancing across the darkness. ‘Artipelagos’ is closer to traditional dub, although organic and tribal drums give its spacious production a distinctive physical presence. ‘Orbits’ is an intricate workout of glitchy details and beautiful keys while the floating ‘Ultramarine’ moves towards IDM without abandoning the album’s dreamlike character. ‘Ganja’ and ‘Where Time Stands Still’ lower the intensity, allowing dub to stretch into more introspective surroundings. ‘Retina’ is especially reflective, its shimmering melody travelling through a tight, clicking rhythm with effortless grace. Finally, ‘Sleepcycle’ leaves us with one final memorable conclusion. Repeating chord patterns circle around a lively bassline while thick waves of electrical texture continually swell, shift and dissolve. It closes an album that rarely settles into one interpretation of dub techno. Dreamroot is vast in length as well as depth. ADILR maintains a strong theme throughout and despite the tracks being from a busy and creative period if over 36 months, the album has a great flow which can be challenging for any artist to achieve across a two-disc set. For Greyscale’s 50th album, it is a fitting celebration of both the label’s history and its continuing desire to explore what comes next.
