Androids EP [Nerve Collect]
Behind the Bass / Club : Release Notes
Bristol techno innovator Pluralist re-emerges under his new alias, Clerc, and debuts on Nerve Collect with the Androids EP. The four tracks are the first he has put together “that felt different to what I was doing under Pluralist” and find him focused on dark, rolling sounds built for the club. Will Bowen has always drawn from the UK undergrounds more interesting intersections, folding funky, techno, bass and dubstep into a sound fine-tuned with global club influences. His productions land on forward-thinking labels and find support from selectors like Ben UFO and Pariah. As Clerc, he pushes further into the shadows where full-bodied rhythms, cosmic transmissions and enveloping bass all collide. ‘Replicant’ lets the bass take the wheel and weave through smeared synths and fractured beats like a transmission from some hyperreal world rendered in impossibly high definition. ‘Conapt’ hits with spring-loaded kicks, abstract gurgles and fizzing bursts of plasma in a deliciously brooding vision of the future that fires both body and brain. Theres a more tribal edge to ‘Mood Organ’, where soft metallic strikes and insistent percussion keep the pressure simmering. Circling spacecraft, whispered vocal fragments and off-grid accents slowly but surely scramble your bearings. Closer ‘Breathe You’re Retired’ is a meticulous percussive workout that’s refined and slippery. Drums coil in on themselves while bass bubbles beneath glitchy details and twitching sci-fi textures. Clerc’s Androids EP is finely engineered techno with a strange, otherworldly presence.
