Following releases on Legendary Sound Research, Quintessentials and Fina, amongst others, Searching Forever marks his debut for Hope Taping is Killing Music. There’s typically plenty to enjoy, from the relentless minor key chords and bluesy vocal samples of “Nothing at All”, and the hazy, soul-flecked deep shuffle of “Feeling Blue”, to the thickset acid bass, shuffling beats and “Deep Burnt” style strings of the standout “Searching Forever”. “One Nation Under a Groove”, with its hustling chord stabs and hazy vocal samples, is also impressive.

The title track is particularly sweaty and once again mines vintage rave influences, with fluid synths and cut-up vocals riding a classic late ’80s/early ’90s breakbeat groove. “Poly Pineapple” is a little deeper, with waves of wide-eyed synths crashing over a thumping house groove. On the flipside, the duo join forces with partner-in-blogging Hammer for a couple of cuts; the woozy, glacial, synth-heavy “Icebowl” and “Day 3”, a stomping chunk of retro-futurist techno smothered in 808 State style synths. By focusing solely on their self-titled debut album, Ólafur and Janus have been able to combine and further develop their unique sound aesthetics to complete an album driven by their mutual love for electronic music. Made in Ólafur’s newly build studio in Reykjavík, Iceland, a majority of the album was recorded using acoustic instruments next to a variety of synthesisers, drum machines and tape delays.
