The man otherwise known as Prince of Denmark takes a break from releasing largely unheralded 12″ singles on his own Traumprinz imprint to deliver an excellent four-tracker for Giegling. It’s a typically intoxicating affair, with gentle deep house textures and becalmed musical touches offering a neat contrast to his shuffling, techno-tempo percussion. Picking a stand-out is hard given the quality on show, though for us it’s a toss-up between the exotic spookiness of “I Gave My Life”, the Mr Fingers-does-the-blues smokiness of “All The Things”, and brilliant ambient closer “Let It Go”. That said, lo-fi techno opener “Messed Up Jam” is sublime, too. It’s the first light of day for both Vrac and Subtil Records, so with no background to go on it’s pure face value for this new production partnership. In line with the strong current of minimal records of recent times, there’s a range of grooves from linear patterns to breakbeat flows, with plenty of space for sound design and experimentation around those featherweight frameworks. “Pertu” in particular features some playful sounds and samples that echo out in the plentiful space afforded, while “Amp” gets into a more techy frame of mind with its sci-fi synth sounds. “Boariam” rounds things out with a more rolling rhythm and plenty of dubby textures for a less surgical approach to production. Man of many monikers Gerd returns to the NY Stomp alias he last used in 2012. “I Feel It Comin’ On”, featuring Matthew Kirkwood, is a sparkling chunk of revivalist US house, with pianos and cut-up soul vocals riding a classic bassline and stomping, basement-friendly beats. Arguably more diverse than Part 1, with krautrock influenced motorik tracks like “Paul The Pylon”, jungle strains in “Phallusaurus Jox”, a little Boards of Canada peeking through in “Polly Epsilon” and a nod to SAW 85-92 on “P-Boots”. Of course, melodies are still the focus of the material, along with a nice settled in comfort level from working with so many familiar sounds and machines. The whole thing inevitably caves in by the end, and trails off along some long-lost ambient coastline from the depths of my mind.
