Behind the Techno (Raw / Deep / Hypnotic) : Release Notes

Following an impressive appearance on the latest Exposure series, Massimo Music steps into the spotlight with Permanent After Hours, his debut outing for the Mood Series and the label’s 161st edition. Coming from Toronto’s underrated underground techno culture of the 1990s and early 2000s, Massimo brings us a three-track EP that clearly shows an artist who can make some highly addictive deep techno. Opening track ‘Sunday Dub’ immediately establishes the EP’s character. A tough, rolling groove drives the production while crisp percussion and a perfectly placed snare create an addictive rhythmic evolution. Beneath the groove lies an aquatic aura that gives the track a buoyant resonance that is floaty despite the brisk pace. ‘Rushing Water’ takes a more meditative route. Rising tension runs through the arrangement, yet the surrounding textures remain calm and inviting. Faint water-like sounds drift through the background, giving the listener visuals of distant lagoons and forgotten oases. Despite the brisk and intricate rhythmic deep-seated in the mix, the overall feeling is one of contemplation and escape. The contrast between motion and stillness is handled beautifully, making this one of the EP’s most surreal moments. Lastly, ‘Jitter Smooth’ succeeds exactly what its title promises. An energetic moves you forward while reflective chord work introduces an autumnal haze across the soundscape. The combination of momentum and introspection is particularly effective, creating a very meditative moment despite the great techy work on the drums. The longer it unfolds, the deeper it pulls you in. Massimo Music demonstrates a mature understanding of mood and space – on a Greyscale level.
