Greyscale’s search for fresh talent continues to pay dividends, with the Mood Series welcoming another promising producer into its ever-expanding catalogue. As the label’s reputation grows, artists from across the globe continue to emerge with music that fits naturally alongside its established sound. For the 164th edition, French newcomer Merqswav makes a splash with The Chapter Unfolds. ‘The Way Unfolds’ opens with a punchy beat and rich chords that linger beneath the surface, giving melody and ambience the opportunity to develop naturally. ‘Childhood Memory’ follows with a beautifully crisp production, where cascading chord work and subtle field recordings combine to create a hypnotic environment. The broken rhythm of ‘Slow Mind Off’ has a more experimental structure to it. Here, silence is used as carefully as sound, while delayed chords bounce through the mix like echoes travelling across vast cavern walls. It is spacious and wonderfully absorbing. ‘March Dusk From Opening Night’ gradually reveals itself as percussion and finely placed textures move together with effortless precision. Saving its deepest excursion until last, ‘Winding Path’ closes the EP in memorable fashion. Wobbling chords, stark bass movements, and delicate layers of radio interference become part of the musical fabric. Each element feels carefully considered, pulling the listener deep into its mesmerizing vortex. Merqswav demonstrates both technical control and musical imagination in equal measures.
