The ever on-point Apparel Music imprint drops Accatone’s ‘Perception’ EP this October, featuring four original tracks from the Portuguese producer. Accatone aka Jose Reis, has been steadily evolving as an artist over the past four years, racking up a string of releases for Roots & Wings, Apparel Music, and Dabit Records. Here he returns to Apparel where he’s a member of the booking agency as well as the imprint. The single opens with title track ‘Perception’ which sees Accatone employ warbling electric piano chords, loose, raw drums, and an infectious acidic bass line as the foundations. Things slowly bloom in this state before Accatone’s unique original vocals are layered on top, creating a classy contemporary house cut. Following is ‘Machine Speak’, which takes on a more stripped, sparse feel this time, with a less-is-more approach achieved with crunchy 4/4 drums, sweeping bass tones, and evolving dubbed out synth stabs, again resulting in something moody and intriguing. PHNTM Out Of Africa Great Stuff Recordings New York techno legend Bryan Cox dons his PHNTM guise once again for the latest slice of Great Stuff, returning to the imprint after his 2011 collaboration with Christian Cambas, Inferno. With releases on imprints like Toolroom, 1605 Music Therapy, Blu Fin and Hotfingers, his alter-ego has been blazing a trail through the world of new skool tech in recent years. Out Of Africa falls just the right side of moody, with its brooding, dramatic tones and bombastic tribal percussion. With plenty of chunk for your Euro, it layers percussion in thick layers, driven by droning atonal bass and unrelenting rhythm. Ominous horns sound at key moments of tension during the track, creating a dramatic slab of dancefloor gold. On the flip, Njabulo is phatter still, with a plump arpeggiated bassline chugging away beneath snappy beats and powerful but never-OTT builds raising the energy further. Little flecks of tribalism pepper the groove, and rousing drum fills punctuate the track’s progression. It’s a taut, meaty track that’s executed with expert finesse. The pairing of John Talabot and Pional has been a somewhat regular oocurence in the past two years, with the two artists collaborating on key tracks for Talabot’s formative ƒIN LP and working together to bring that record to the live arena following its release early last year. Now, the two Spanish producers have announced plans to release a new collaborative track under the collective name Lost Scripts, which is set to appear on the inauguaral release for Young Turks’s new 12″ series. Lost Scripts’ “I’ll Be Watching You”—an effort Juno Plus describes as a “brooding slice of skipping, warm, vocal electronics”—will serve as the forthcoming record’s a-side, while Koreless’ “Sun” (which first saw a release on the UK producer’s Yugen EP) will serve as the vinyl’s flipside offering.
