Hoya:Hoya, the night he started with Jonny Dub back in 2008, quickly became noted for its eclecticism and open-minded booking approach, with artists ranging from The Gaslamp Killer to Ikonika and James T. Cotton. Soon spotted by the keen eyes at fabric, the collective were invited to host Room Three in 2011, and following its immediate success they moved to Room Two, where they now hold their quarterly residency. It turns out Noo is the new project from Daze Dasen and Sami Liuski, whose respective work as Plastique De Reve and Bangkok Impact / Putsch ’79 has featured on amongst other labels Death From Abroad, IDJ, Creme and Clone. Together as Noo they are granted the honour of releasing the first Optimo Music Disco Plate with two cuts of sublime Modern Disco (not Nu Disco as the label themselves are at pains to point out) Heavy on luscious string heavy musicality and swooping arrangements, both “The First Night” and “No More” seem destined to become record box mainstays for any selectors that play disco.

Spectrum is the project’s first outing, and sees the extended combo delving into the murky world of out-there techno. In practice, that means thunderous beats, sub-heavy basslines, horror-influenced textures and psychedelic electronics. It’s a formula that means for interesting – if occasionally intense – listening, with all three tracks sounding ready-made for dark rooms at five in the morning. Our pick is probably the acid-flecked bounce of “Spectrum 3” – a kind of intense take on early bleep records – though “Spectrum 1” is not far behind.

Under His Own Name But Also Sir 8:37 Total Playtime: 16:21 min The Hinge Finger label overseen by Joy Orbison and TTT boss Will Bankhead returns with Cologne producer Barnt at the helm for the excellent two track His Name 12″. Jobbing house and techno selectors will be eminently familiar with the output of Daniel Ansorge as Barnt, whose music has resulted in some fine 12″s for the likes of Comeme, Mule Musiq and his own Magazine label. Still, not the most obvious of candidates for a Hinge Finger release, but much the same was said about both Madteo and Mix Mup at the time of their announcements on the label. Both “Chappell” and “Under His Own Name But Also As Sir” fit the Barnt mould perfectly, taking the functionalism of techno’s rhythmic backbone and playfully toying around with it resulting in some truly memorable sonics. The B Side track in particular is up there with Ansorge’s Comeme “Tunsten”.
