This sophomore EP builds on their debut, delivering five more chunks of undulating, bass-heavy deep house. Highlights are plentiful, from the “Bar A Thym” style cowbells, riffs and rolling grooves of “Nothing To Undo” and sub-heavy, UKG-influenced wobble of “Masterkill”, to the deep and dreamy flex of the extra-intoxicating title track. That track is given the remix treatment by US house veteran Mr V, who drops two contrasting versions; the tech-tinged deep house shuffle of his Sole Channel Mix, and the sparse-but-attractive electronics and minimal-influenced rhythms of the 2AM Mix.

Indeed, there is certainly a less complicated feel to the three tracks here and it’s no bad thing, with a certain Newworldaquarium charm to the manner in which lead cut “Never In Doubt” gracefully covers the A side. The slippery broken beats which surface deep into the production’s duration are perhaps the one concession to current Bristol dynamics. There are hints of Detroit in the chords and keys of “Storms” whilst the brief, twisting “Tin” is perhaps the closest thing to Livity Sound here. Clear hints of Armando, Virgo Four and early Belgian techno can be heard in the cut-up stabs, rolling basslines and jackin’ grooves of “Not Nois” and TB-303-powered “Listen You”. There’s a deeper, woozier feel about “Natil Box”, which combines brilliantly loose drum machine programming with some gently spacey chords. Produced between ’98 and ’99, the tracks were originally released separately on 2 different 12’s, and now come together, re-mastered on INF-014. ‘VEX-1’ is Sumner’s rightful slice of historic Brooklyn House pie, amongst contemporaries like Joey Beltram, or the output of labels like Nu-Groove. Made while living and working at the now infamous music building in Manhattan, with synthesiser mecca Rouge Music downstairs, the track is a great insight into what was going at the Inanimate Objects studio during that time. The DMO sessions were a nod to the more spaced out, string laden Deep House that resonated out of Chicago towards New York, but was also readily available at clubs like Shelter.
